Radio Frequency (RF) and power semiconductor patent portfolio of 80 patent assets, including 54 US patents.
Martin Bijman, the director of intellectual property products at TechInsights has praised this portfolio: “It appears this portfolio would be of interest considering it has some early patents in the segment, and is ranked fourth in Patent Influence after Cree (49%), Toyoda Gosei (14%), and Samsung (12%)" (source: iam)
The patent portfolio is the result of more than $100 million in R&D by SETi, which was founded in 1999 at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. SETi was at the forefront of GaN device development for high power RF and LED UV technologies.
These patents have significant value because high breakdown voltage is one of the hallmarks of GaN technology. Applications: Power amplifiers Companies: Sumitomo, Cree, Qorvo
The patents provide a significant amount of data showing improved noise, reverse leakage current, lower gate capacitance, comparable current performance and gain, reduced gate current. Applications: Broad applications for reducing leakage current (and therefore static power consumption): GaN switches and amplifiers, photodetectors, low noise amplifiers Companies: Qorvo, Infineon, MACOM, Custom MMIC
This portfolio can have potential value for high power products, not just RF. Applications: Potential products include: high voltage switching regulator, 5G microwave switches, and automotive switch products are potential applications. Companies: TI, Infineon, Cree, Navitas, GaN Systems, EPC, Dialog, and a number of military contractors - Boeing, HRL, Teledyne, Raytheon, Lockheed, etc.
